The title change four days prior in New York City was not recognized in Pittsburgh due to a strained relationship between Toots Mondt, who ran the Pittsburgh shows, and Vince McMahon Sr., who ran the New York shows. Following this match Rivera and Marino continued to be recognized as champions in New York.
